Letter to the Editor
Learn the science prior to condemning theory

This is in response to the letter sent in previously by Neill Smith on evolutionary theory being simply speculation ("Evolution theory is simply speculation," April 7).

As a scientist I feel it is necessary to point out that he is wrong. His "facts" are flawed at best, and I winced as I read what he, and others like him, had to say.

My question to him is where on Earth did you get your information on evolution? What kind of authority do you have on the subject?

I'm not trying to be rude, but I find that the people who are most opposed to evolution are the ones who really are poorly informed about it.

The notion that there is no scientifically observable evidence for evolution is grossly untrue. Anyone who has taken antibiotics for a length of time and experienced the effects of resistant bacteria knows better.

I could go on and on with further examples, but I'll spare everyone.

I'm inclined to believe that Mr. Smith isn't all that familar with the subject, and I challenge him and others who are in opposition to evoluion to actually bother to read the literature on the subject.

At the very least, get your facts straight by talking to someone with a degree who has taken more than an introductory course on the subject. Then, if you still have a problem with it, we can discuss it.
