Offense is key in win against Quakers
Women's Lacrosse

Collegian Staff Writer

You didn't have to watch any part of yesterday's game to know that the No. 8 Penn State women's lacrosse team came away with a 16-9 victory against No. 15 Penn.

All you had to see were the Nittany Lions (8-3, 2-0 ALC) leaving Jeffrey Field -- banging their sticks, in unison, against the ceiling of their blue school bus heading away from their home turf.

The Lions scored 16 goals on 33 shots and forced the Quakers (5-4, 1-1 Ivy) to use all three goalies they had on the roster.

Senior attack Emily Chambers scored six minutes into the game on a free-position shot to put the Lions up 1-0. Scoring went back-and-forth throughout the first half until Penn, up 5-4, called timeout with 4:47 left in the first half.

On the ensuing possession, Lori Havrilla scored on a fast break, igniting the Lions offense, which went on to score two more goals before halftime to go ahead 7-5.

"We get a lot of momentum when we come up with a fast-break goal," Penn State head coach Suzanne Isidor said. "That's huge for us."

The Lions carried their momentum into the second half, scoring five goals in a row against two different Quaker goaltenders. Penn starting goalie Liz Lorelli spent the first seven minutes of the second half on the sideline before replacing backup Karrie Moore, who gave up goals on all three shots she faced.

"We came up with all types of big shots," Isidor said. "We didn't really shoot well early on, but that was the difference when we made our runs."

After a Quaker goal with 16 minutes to go, the Lions went on one final three-goal run to seal the game. After Chamber's second goal of the day, the Quakers inserted their third string goalie into the contest.

Penn State senior attack Kristen Burke led the Lions in goals with five, and tied Chambers, Lindsay Dutch and Lori Havrilla for the team high in assists with two. Dutch and Havrilla added three and two goals each, respectively.

The victory was the Lions first win in State College against its Ivy League foe since 1987.

"In our minds it's the battle of the state," Dutch said. "We gotta beat the smart kids."
