Judge Marjorie A. Rendell, wife of Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, toured State College yesterday to discuss initiatives to improve civic responsibility among young students.
During her tour, Rendell met with members of the local media, including The Daily Collegian and the Centre Daily Times.
She also paid a visit to State College Area High School before appearing at a meeting with the two local chapters of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women.
Rendell encouraged women at the meeting to attend the second-annual Pennsylvania Governor's Conference for Women on Nov. 15 in Philadelphia.
In addition to attending, each woman was encouraged to recommend vendors and sponsors for the event.
The conference would accept women from high school and older, she said.
Rendell also said she had to be selective of which initiatives she wanted to support after becoming first lady because of her "day job," as a federal judge on the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals.
She said her husband's support of women's rights is the reason there are many women in his cabinet in Harrisburg.
