Stylish starlets sizzle with fashion sense

Collegian Staff Writer

You'd think that with all the help they get from stylists, hair, and makeup, actresses and singers would always look good when placed in a public setting. Yet we all know -- thanks to the Geena Davises, Paula Abduls and Melanie Griffiths of the Tinseltown -- that this is not the case. Stars who actually have a definite developed style are not that common these days.

In no specific order (because I couldn't decide on one), these are my top three picks for ladies -- and their stylists -- currently experiencing career-highs all the while maintaining an individual pizazz that makes them memorable every time we see them.

Drea de Matteo

Best known for playing a coke-sniffing eventually whacked Adriana on The Sopranos who then resurrected herself a few months later to star in Joey, Drea has grown up stylistically in the last few years as she went from leather pants and denim jackets to satin and silk suits. The Italian-American gal likes primarily dark colors and a rock n' roll edge to everything she wears. She isn't afraid to take risks and granted, she has made one or two mistakes, but she always bounces back with something fabulous. But nothing tops her best fashion moment: 2004 Emmys.

Scarlett Johansson

Though she's only been truly mega-famous for about a year and a half and she's only twenty, Ms. Johansson has proven she has a fantastic sense of what looks good on the clothing rack and what fits and flatters her body. Her wardrobe is incredibly versatile yet has the dominant influence of old Hollywood with long delicate gowns, tasteful cleavage with push-up corsets. She'll try just about any color, occasionally show some leg and model what has become her signature scarlet lipstick. Scarlett's designer of the moment is Roland Mouret who designed her outfits worn at both this year's Golden Globes and Oscars.

Beyoncé

I don't want to be cliché but Bee just never ever goes wrong. With the help of her mother, she has got her look down pat. Bootylicious to classy-rific she's the queen of doing-it-up without over doing it.

For her, it's all about the extreme glamour and tip-top high fashion. Combining plunging neck and hip lines, timeless evening dresses, hot-hot pants, afros to slick and straight, and the best taste for shoes in the entire music world, Beyoncé has created a divatastic look not even nearly matched by anyone within the singin' and dancin' world.

She's elegant, sexy and comfortable. With her style, there's never a dull moment.
