Strom, Wright get invite to WNBA draft combine

Penn State Lady Lions senior guards Tanisha Wright and Jess Strom received invites to participate in the WNBA scouting combine, being held Friday and Saturday in Westchester, N.Y.

The combine is the invitation-only camp that the WNBA puts on prior to its draft. A representative from each of the WNBA teams will be in attendance. Teams do not hold tryouts, and most of the draft picks come directly from this combine.

Wright, a three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year selection, led the Big Ten in scoring during the regular season this year. She finished her career with 1,995 points. She was just the third player in Penn State history to rank in the school's top 10 in scoring, assists and steals. Wright also was a first-team USBWA All-American this year, a third-team Associated Press All-American and a Kodak All-American Honorable Mention selection.

Strom, a four-year starter at point guard, was also an all-Big Ten pick this year. She led the Big Ten in steals and assists for most of the season, finishing her career with 776 assists -- she was just the fourth player in Big Ten history to amass 700 or more assists. She also was a Kodak All-American Honorable Mention selection.

The 2005 WNBA Draft will be held on April 16. Penn State currently has three players in the WNBA: Kelly Mazzante and Helen Darling of the Charlotte Sting, and Jess Brungo of the Connecticut Sun. Former Penn State and Olympian Suzie McConnell Serio is head coach of the Minnesota Lynx.
