Player cleared in bow case

Collegian Staff Writer

A third Penn State football player who had been suspended indefinitely from the team for his alleged involvement in a January bow-and-arrow incident has been cleared by the Office of Judicial Affairs, a source close to the situation told The Daily Collegian yesterday.

Defensive tackle Scott Paxson met with Judicial Affairs individually Friday; it was decided that he will face no disciplinary action from the university in relation to the incident, according to the source.

"Judicial Affairs dismissed the charges," said the source, who asked not to be named. "The worst is over."

In having all charges dropped by the university, Paxson joins teammates Andrew Richardson and Tyler Reed, who were cleared by Judicial Affairs in individual meetings Thursday. None of the three, however, have yet resumed participation in spring practice with the team.

The source could not speak to the status of center E.Z. Smith, who was also placed under judicial review for his link to the incident.

Paxson, Reed, Richardson and Smith were suspended indefinitely from the team by coach Joe Paterno in a team meeting before the weekend of March 25. The suspension was a result of the four players' potential role in an incident in which arrows were fired through the wall of Nittany Apartments Building 33, penetrating into the kitchen of the adjoining residence that was occupied.

Summary charges for criminal mischief were filed by Penn State University Police against Paxson and Reed, both of Nittany Apartments Building 33, on March 22. No charges were filed by police against Richardson, also of Nittany Apartments Building 33, or Smith, who does not live on campus. Penn State Police Supervisor Bill Moerschbacher said last night that there have been no charges filed in the case, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Paxson and Smith started all 11 games last year at defensive tackle and center, respectively, while Reed started nine games at guard. Richardson started six games at offensive tackle.
