A Penn State student has been charged with underage possession of alcohol and aggravated assault for allegedly punching a Penn State University Police officer in the face early Friday morning.

Andrew Samitz (freshman-communications) was arrested and arraigned before District Justice Jonathan Grine Friday and placed in Centre County Prison on $10,000 straight bail. He was released later that day after posting bail.

The police responded to a call from a resident assistant in Cross Hall for a room party with 13 people, University Police officer Don Hazel said.

According to court documents, there were numerous cans of Natural Light Beer and bottles of vodka in the room.

Hazel said that after two police officers checked the students' Pennsylvania licenses or Penn State ID cards, they determined that everyone in the room was under 21, except one person.

"Officer [Adam] Sucheski and Officer [Matthew] Shupenko went to break it up and the one person took off down the hall," Hazel said.

According to police, Shupenko chased Samitz to the ground floor of Cross Hall, grabbed his left arm and ordered him to get on the floor, but Samitz refused, Hazel said.

"While he was trying to get a hold of him to put him in handcuffs, he struck the officer in the face," Hazel said.

Samitz then broke free and ran down the hallway into Ewing Hall and ran into a room, police said.

Two police officers then took him into custody.

Hazel said Shupenko received a large bruise and swelling under and above the right eye, a cut on the inside of his upper lip, and a cut on his left hand.

Shupenko was bleeding when he was evaluated by Penn State Emergency Medical Services, police said.

Hazel said that Shupenko did not suffer any permanent injuries and is recovering.

Samitz's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
