NEWS

After a whirlwind two weeks of campaigning, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) members are looking forward to a restful weekend before getting back to work Monday.

Jim Donovan, 2004's "Best Rock Pop Percussionist" according to Drum! Magazine and drummer for the multi-platinum band Rusted Root, will be holding a drum session this weekend at the Wesley Student Center of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 256 E. College Ave.

About 25 members of Penn State's Students for Life gathered to pray as part of Life Week 2005 last night.

Hip hop fans will have a free way to check out some up-and-coming artists tonight as Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. presents a Roc-A-Fella Records showcase.

For the first few minutes of last night's episode of Survivor: Palau, Ian Rosenberger looked like quite the all-star. The former president of the Undergraduate Student Government kicked off the evening by lugging a huge, beach ball-sized clam to the shore and plopping it on the sand. "Be careful," Ian said. "He tried to eat me." The clam was good for about seven pounds worth of meat, according to one tribe member, just enough for everyone in Ian's Koror tribe to enjoy almost a pound each. A catch like this is of immeasurable value in a game like Survivor where protein is scarce.

The preliminary report on the Bellefonte-area airplane crash that killed six people Saturday will be released today.

A grand jury investigation resulted in the arrests and arraignments of six people yesterday, as part of what the Attorney General's Office has called the "largest heroin operation that we have ever seen in Centre County."

Only a handful of people attended the public information session held last night in College Township intended to inform local residents about the air quality in Centre County.

A professional drag show troupe strutted, danced and lip-synched its way onstage at HUB Heritage Hall last night, celebrating Pride Week.

With the fifth highest qualifying score in the field, the Penn State men's gymnastics team was announced as part of the 2005 NCAA Championship field Wednesday. The defending national champions, Penn State also returns the 2004 NCAA all-around champion in Luis Vargas.

Now the real season begins.

Although the national championship is just more than two weeks away, the Penn State women's rugby team is already on a mission to score its second title in as many years.

For the first time this season in Big Ten play, the No. 63 Penn State men's tennis team will be favored, at least as far as rankings go.

Wins and losses have come in pairs lately for the Penn State women's lacrosse team.

The Penn State men's track and field team has been looking forward to the start of the outdoor season all year. For one, it is a fresh start after an up and down indoor season.

The Penn State crew team is looking to break the ice, both figuratively and literally, when it travels to the Lehigh River to face Lehigh University in the first regatta of the spring season at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

The Penn State women's tennis team's schedule isn't doing the Nittany Lions any favors.

The Penn State baseball team has one characteristic going for it this season that it hasn't had in years past.

Two Penn State football players under judicial review for their potential involvement in a January bow-and-arrow incident at an on-campus apartment received good news yesterday.

Few teams have suffered through a week like the Penn State men's lacrosse team. But, then, no team should ever have to in the first place.

Before Wednesday's four-game thumping of Juniata, Penn State men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik cited the match as important because it was a potential EIVA finals matchup. The contest at 7 tonight against George Mason in Rec Hall will fit the same bill, as the third-ranked Nittany Lions (23-3, 9-0 EIVA) look to put away the No. 2 team in the conference.

Win once and you're in. Win twice and you're set. Lose and your season is over.

Jim Thorpe was a giant of track and field, winning both the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympic Games.

As the saying goes, those who can, do; and those who can't, teach. It also seems that those who can become celebrities, and those who can't become celebrity publicists, as in the world of MTV's newest reality show PoweR Girls. This show follows the lives of four young celebrity publicists who work for the ever-so-popular Lizzie Grubman.

Remember when you were a kid and you had those books that came with an audiocassette? You would follow along with the recording, turning the pages at the "beep" or whatever noise instructed you to do so.

Old cast members of The Real World and Road Rules are back for yet another challenge: The Inferno II.

If I tell you I've listened to M.I.A.'s Arular at least 50 times since last week and that I can't help but dance every time "Bingo" impales my ears, will you believe me? Will you believe me if I say it's spastic and innovative and confusing and challenging and intelligent and just the remedy pop music so direly needs? Will you believe me if I baptize it the best album of the year?

The poster for the movie Guess Who displays an overbearing Bernie Mac squashing Ashton Kutcher into a Slim Jim in one tiny spot of a large yellow sofa. Yeah, it didn't make me want to see the film either, but it did give me an idea of where I was going when I went into the theater.

Beck's first two major label releases, Mellow Gold and Odelay, although very different from each other, existed in the same vein musically in that they established the artist's reputation for producing albums of a schizophrenic nature.

From now until Sunday, students Jamel Craig (graduate-art) and Matthew Sobb (graduate-art) will be showcasing their work in the Zoller Gallery for the Masters of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition.

Israeli hip hop group Hadag Nahash is coming to HUB Alumni Hall Sunday.

Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., will feature Bill Filer and Magic Hat beer (231-4745).
