Incumbents will relax before getting to work

Collegian Staff Writer

After a whirlwind two weeks of campaigning, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) members are looking forward to a restful weekend before getting back to work Monday.

Newly re-elected USG Vice President Luke Adams said he is planning on relaxing this weekend before meetings Monday. "I'm just planning on taking a day or two to enjoy this win," he said. "Galen and I will really start cracking on the new platforms on Monday."

On Wednesday night, USG President Galen Foulke and Adams became the first pair of USG candidates to be successfully re-elected, but Adams said he does not feel as much pressure going into his second term.

"I feel more relaxed this time around because last time, I did not really know how things worked," he said.

Foulke said he is planning on going home this weekend and spending time with his family and added the first step in the planning process for next year is to select new cabinet members to replace those graduating this year.

"We will begin by making cabinet applications available and interviewing potential members," he said. "This is usually a fairly intensive and lengthy process and should take a substantial amount of time."

Foulke said he did not yet have an exact number of how many cabinet members will need to be replaced.

Adams said he and Foulke would like to talk to the candidates who did not win Wednesday night and receive input about their platforms.

"To ignore the other candidates would be a mistake on our part," he said. "We realize that they care a great deal about our government and we would love to receive their input."

Although Foulke and Adams won their re-election by nearly 1,300 votes, their win could be in jeopardy because of an election violation on Wednesday night. Students from Brumbaugh Hall said representatives from the "Foulke 'n' A" campaign knocked on their doors at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

These actions could potentially be in violation of a canvassing policy that states anyone wishing to canvass must register with the assistant director of the Office of Residence Life at least 24 hours prior to entering a residence hall.

Head Election Commissioner Diana Maxham said election commissioners will not look any further into the violation until Monday.

"A lot of our investigators are taking the weekend off and going home, so we really won't have any time to do anything before Monday," she said.

She added that once investigations begin, the election commission will work as quickly as possible to settle the matter.

Foulke said he is still not sure of all the details concerning the violation, and added he will be contacting campaign legal counsel Matt Midles on Monday.

Foulke said just in case there were possible violations on election day, his campaign made sure to leave extra money in their executive account.

"It is a pretty common practice," he said. "You do not do it with the intent to break the rules, but sometimes accidents happen."

If Foulke and Adams are found in violation, and the commission fines exceed their $550 executive spending limit, then the executive ticket with the next highest vote count, who did not surpass their spending cap, will assume office.

Newly elected Town Sen. Andy Banducci said he hopes that next year's USG will be able to conduct business without the internal fighting that plagued it this year.

"I really hope that this year will be more about the students than about the internal politics between USG members," he said. "I'm sure we'll have our disagreements, but I am hopeful that we will be able to have a constructive relationship and work through them."
