PSU bats devastate hapless Bucknell
Baseball

Collegian Staff Writer

Everything seemed to go the Penn State baseball team's way yesterday at Beaver Field.

Three Bucknell errors, a dozen walks, timely hitting -- the Nittany Lions left no stone unturned.

Penn State recorded its most lopsided win of the season, 19-6, after simply beating up on an outmatched Bucknell pitching staff.

And the Lions didn't even have to do much work.

The Bison walked six Penn State batters -- in the third inning alone -- as the Lions tallied eight runs on three hits to take a commanding 10-3 lead.

All in all, Bucknell walked a dozen Lions and went through seven different pitchers.

"Unfortunately, pitching is such an important part," Bison coach Gene Depew said.

"And we just struggled there -- especially in the third inning."

Bison reliever Jason Buursma hit back-to-back batters in the third. And after walking another Lion, Marc Cusatt came in to relieve the struggling Buursma.

Cusatt didn't fare much better. He walked three batters as well.

Penn State coach Robbie Wine didn't seem pleased with his pitching staff, either.

"I don't know if we pitched that well today," he said. "It was an OK game, but we went through the motions there early."

Needless to say, offense was the bright spot during the three-hour, 18-minute game.

Both teams recorded 15 hits apiece, and Penn State had at least one player break out of his slump.

Junior infielder Scott Gummo, who started the season 0-for-15, had a career game.

He went 4-for-6, collected a career-high six RBI and was one homer short of the cycle.

"At first, I was in a slump a little bit and really didn't see the ball as well," he acknowledged. "But the last couple weeks, I've been hitting well."

The Lions actually found themselves down early, trailing 3-2 after the second frame.

Of course, recording eight runs in the third helped ease Penn State's nerves.

"I was a little on edge," Wine said about his mentality before the third.

Both teams often substituted later in the game, as the two were looking for their younger players to gain experience before this weekend's conference matchups.

Some 45 players saw action in yesterday's contest, as senior Josh Palm picked up the pitching win -- despite a three-inning, three-run performance.

Four Penn State players also made their season debut -- Mark Wojtowicz, George Neiman, Travis Garret and Kevin McCausland.

McCausland closed out the game by allowing no runs on three walks and two strikeouts.

The matchup was Penn State and Bucknell's 140th meeting, making it the Lions' longest rivalry.

Penn State has won the last 10 games against the Bison.
