Dinkelspiel and Budd fliers violate elections code
The two candidates upset the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community by placing controversial fliers that played off of another ticket's last names.

Campaign fliers for Undergraduate Student Government (USG) executive candidates Robert Dinkelspiel and Joseph Budd that read "Don't get Foulked in the A" raised some controversy on election day yesterday.

Budd said the fliers, which were handed out to bystanders on campus, were playing off the names of their opponents Galen Foulke and Luke Adams, and the ticket's slogan, "Foulke 'n' A."

Head Elections Commissioner Diana Maxham said the fliers were a violation of the elections code policy on harassment and discrimination.

She added that the commission had received many formal complaints about the "distasteful nature" of the fliers.

"We received many complaints from the LGBTA [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied] community," Maxham said.

Dinkelspiel said the flier was not intended to be offensive.

"This does not in any way refer to the LGBTA community," he said. "It is nothing more, nothing less."

Allies President Christy Merchant said the Dinkelspiel/Budd campaign was insensitive to the LGBTA community.

"If they were really knowledgeable about diversity issues, they would not have printed the fliers," she said. "Someone should have said this might be construed as homophobic."

"If they did realize," Merchant added, "then that's even worse."

Adams said the fliers were wrong and offensive. "[Sodomy] is not a good thing to stick on a campaign flier," he said.

Maxham said that after a violation to the USG Supreme Court has been filed, the court will review the brief and the offenders will have the opportunity to petition the court.

She added that there has not yet been a date set for the court hearing. At this point, Dinkelspiel said, the campaign is unsure whether it will contest the violation.
