Students say Foulke 'n' A
Foulke, Adams first incumbents to win re-election

Collegian Staff Writer

In the first successful re-election campaign in Undergraduate Student Government (USG) history, Galen Foulke (junior-premedicine) and Luke Adams (junior-premedicine) will remain USG president and vice president, beating the second-place candidates by 1,298 votes yesterday.

Foulke and Adams received 2,495 votes -- 35.9 percent of the total 6,950 votes cast.

Second-place candidates Mahmoud Ablan (junior-political science) and Kyle Aucker (junior-industrial engineering) garnered 1,197 votes.

To the beat of Queen's "Eye of the Tiger," the elections commission silenced the crowd of about 250 as it narrowed the ballot to the top two tickets.

When Foulke and Adams' victory was announced at about 12:22 a.m., 30 supporters clad in Foulke/Adams T-shirts hoisted Foulke and his younger sister Logan onto their shoulders while chanting the campaign slogan "Foulke 'n' A."

"It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the Undergraduate Student Government president," Foulke said as his supporters danced in a conga line around HUB Alumni Hall. "Especially to be trusted with this honor again."

Foulke said after the pair gets some sleep they plan on doing exactly what they set out to do.

Adams agreed that today will be a very busy day.

Ablan and Aucker spent election day campaigning on a charter bus adorned with balloons and campaign signs, which gave about 600 students free rides around campus during its six-hour run.

"No one gave us a second chance," Ablan said, referring to The Daily Collegian's retraction of the pair's endorsement. "But I'm very proud of my staff."

Aucker said he and Ablan still plan to continue working for the students of Penn State.

Third-place candidates Scott Sherbine (junior-communication arts and sciences) and Alex Ibrahim (sophomore-political science) won 897 votes.

Ibrahim said he was not surprised with this year's low voter turnout, which was just more than half of last year's.

"[This] just shows how many Penn State students aren't impressed with USG," he said. "Something needs to be done to fix USG and get more people involved."

Candidates Michael Peters (sophomore-political science) and Ross Moore (sophomore-mechanical and nuclear engineering) finished in fourth place.

Even though they didn't win, Peters said, running for USG was not a lost cause because they succeed in promoting greek pride -- one of their main goals.

Robert Dinkelspiel (junior-business administration) and Joseph Budd (junior- finance) said they were expecting many more than their total 458 votes.

"Are we frustrated--yes, are we upset--yes, can we overcome--yes. Dinkelspiel and Budd have not finished leaving their mark on Penn State," Dinkelspiel said.

Candidates Mark Taticchi (sophomore- economics, political science, and history) and Rodney Hughes (sophomore-economics) said communication will be the key to a successful year of student government.

Both of the winning candidates' families shared in the celebration last night.

Samuel Alousia, Foulke's grandfather said he thought his grandson was successful because of the honesty he shows in his work.

"Galen is very honest and he would not say anything that he does not believe in," he said.

Head Elections Commission Diana Maxham said she was disappointed in the low voter turnout, but attributed it to decreased visibility campaigns.

Maxham said Foulke and Adams won by a convincing margin.

"It was not as close as everyone said it would be," she said. "I am really proud that all the campaigns took that extra [campaign] push today."
