Melissa Scheiner of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority hardly showed any signs of nervousness before stepping into the limelight alone at the second Panhellenic Pride Week Sisterhood Talent Show.
"I've performed a lot throughout my life, but I'm a little nervous," Scheiner (junior-economics) said. "It helps to have my sisters here. ... I would never have volunteered if I didn't know they were going to be here supporting me."
Support from sorority members was the common theme at the talent show held last night at HUB Alumni Hall. Although a Maroon 5 concert occurred at the same time as the show, more than 150 sorority members came out to cheer on the performers.
"There are no requirements or auditions for the talent show, and participation is optional, but all chapters participate to some degree," Panhellenic Vice President of Membership Samantha Marpe said.
"Panhellenic chairwomen from many different chapters are in charge of putting together the event, and all the sorority chapters put together their own acts. It's really a fun night for everyone, and it showcases the great talents of our women," she added.
Four Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. members set the high-energy mood as special guests at the start of the show with stomps and canes in their popular step show.
"We try to support the other councils as they support us," Kappa Alpha Psi member Albert Meeks (senior-telecommunications) said.
A medley of different performances included a holiday lip-sync by Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, a sisterhood dance mix performed by Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and an Old School dance and skit by Kappa Delta sorority.
Costumes ranged from sorority T-shirts and jeans to cowgirl get-ups.
Megan Moran (freshman-division of undergraduate studies), a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, said her sorority's inspiration for the Napoleon Dynamite-style sign-language performance stemmed from a creative twist on her sorority's song, "The Rose."
"It's part of Napoleon Dynamite, and also our sorority's song, so we thought it would be funny to use it," she said.
"It's neat to see all the sororities and watch everyone else," Moran added.
