Service for crash victims arranged for tomorrow

On Saturday, March 26, a tragic accident took the lives of three members of the Penn State men's lacrosse extended family when Jeff, Karen and Eric Jacober passed away.

Services for the parents and younger brother of senior captain Mike Jacober will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Temple Beth-El in Providence, R.I. The Penn State men's lacrosse team will travel to the services together in support of their teammate and friend.

"We're providing support in any way we can for Mike during this difficult time," Penn State coach Glenn Thiel said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike, his family and friends. It's a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to both families."

"Penn State athletics would like to express its appreciation of the support received for Mike, his family and friends, and the entire men's lacrosse family," Penn State athletic director Tim Curley said.

LHP Alan Stidfole wins Big Ten pitching honors

Penn State junior left-hander Alan Stidfole picked up his first career conference weekly honors as he was named the Big Ten Conference's co-Pitcher of the Week yesterday.

Stidfole struck out a career-high 10 batters and gave up just three infield singles in 6 1/3 scoreless innings of work in a 1-0 win against James Madison on Sunday.

He struck out the side in two innings, and didn't allow a ball to leave the infield all day.

Stidfole joins sophomore Craig Clark as Penn State players who have picked up Big Ten weekly honors this season.

Penn State (7-6) will hold its home opener at 3 p.m. today when it plays host to St. Bonaventure at Beaver Field.

The Nittany Lions will play another non-conference mid-week contest at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Beaver Field.

Tomorrow's game against Bucknell will be a makeup for last week's postponed home opener. A doubleheader was wiped out by an unexpected snowstorm.

Both games can be heard live on WMAJ (1450), and a link to listen will be available at GoPSUsports.com.

Gymnastics team earns No. 2 seed at Regionals

The 11th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastics team (23-5) earned the second seed in the NCAA West Regional Championships, slated for April 9 in Seattle. The Nittany Lions join No. 2 UCLA, No. 14 Central Michigan, No. 24 and host Washington, Stanford and Boise State in the field for the NCAA West Regional Championships. The top two teams in each of the six regionals advance to the NCAA Championships, hosted by Auburn April 21-23.

"We are very excited to be a part of the NCAA Regional Championships," Penn State coach Steve Shephard said. "We look forward to some great competition in Seattle and our team is ready for the challenge of competing to get to the national championships."

Penn State will be looking to advance to its first nationals appearance since 2000, when the Lions finished seventh.

Penn State is one of five Big Ten teams to be selected to the NCAA Regional Championships.
