Gas line break results in evacuations
News in Brief

The State College Police Department and Columbia Gas responded to a gas leak at about 1 p.m. Friday on the 200 block of East Beaver Avenue that closed a section of East Beaver Avenue for about three hours. No injuries were reported.

Cpl. William Muse said the gas leak originated in a construction site to the rear of the site at 255 E. Beaver Ave. Police diverted traffic from the intersection of Pugh Street and Beaver Avenue to the intersection of Locust Lane and Beaver Avenue. McAllister Street was also blocked.

Muse added that residents of Penn Tower, 255 E. Beaver Ave., were evacuated as a result of the leak. Muse said Beaver Avenue re-opened between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Friday, after Columbia Gas made the necessary repairs.

Alpha Fire Co. Chief Stan Clouser said the leak occurred when a construction company broke through the underground main gas line.
