A former State College Area High School assistant football coach has been charged with corruption of minors and furnishing alcohol to minors after he allegedly took a 16-year-old student he was dating to a local bar, State College Police said.
According to court documents, the student went with Joseph Bergstrom, 33, to Adam's Apple at the Tavern Restaurant on Feb. 19, where Bergstrom allegedly provided her with alcohol.
"What I understand is that he bought the drinks for her," State College Police Det. Ralph Ralston said.
Court documents state that the girl with Bergstrom admitted to having a mixed drink that she thought was called Forbidden Fruit.
According to court documents, she said she was served by a bartender, who did not ask for any identification.
Pat Daugherty, Adam's Apple manager, said the bartender did not ask the girl for identification.
"We didn't ID someone and we're wrong ... we didn't do a basic part of our job," he said.
However, Daugherty said he does not know what exactly happened.
"[The bartender] said that the guy bought the drink for her, but she said she got served [alcohol] ... I don't know which is true because I also know that she told her parents she didn't have any drinks," Daugherty said.
A Forbidden Fruit is a 19-ounce drink with about two ounces of alcohol that includes Sloe Gin, Amaretto, Champagne, Southern Comfort and fruit juices.
The girl told police that after hearing Bergstrom say he had too much to drink, they took a taxi to Bergstrom's house.
Ralston said the girl spent the night at Bergstrom's house and they slept in the same bed, but she denied there was any sexual contact.
Ralston said that the corruption of minors charge comes from the fact that the defendant bought mixed drinks with alcohol for the defendant in addition to sleeping with the minor.
A relationship between the two individuals started sometime during the 2004 academic year, and the girl's parents told police that they were aware of the relationship and approve of it.
The student's name is not being released because of her age and the nature of the situation.
Mary Jenn Dorman, executive secretary to the superintendent of the State College Area School District, said Bergstrom's last day of work was Feb. 22 and his resignation was accepted on March 14.
Dorman said she could not say what reason Bergstrom gave for leaving the high school.
