"Start to breathe and fake a smile, it's all the same after a while."
I couldn't have said it better myself. The lyric comes from the first track off Lifehouse's self-titled third album, released March 22. Fans who have been hanging by a moment since the beginning will not be disappointed, especially since the new songs resemble those on the band's first album, No Name Face.
However, change can be a good thing, and the lack of that may fail to attract new fans. The first single, "You and Me," is a great love song, one to write in your AOL Instant Messenger profile and dedicate to your significant other. But this sweet song does not particularly stand out, so it might not capture the interest of new fans and is much better suited as a second single. A better choice would have been "We'll Never Know," a more upbeat song with a catchy chorus that is hard to get out of your head. Radio listeners would recognize the band's sound, yet be intrigued because it is not quite the sound they have heard in the past. "Chapter One" is probably the best song on the album, with cheery music and sing-songy lyrics that showcase vocalist Jason Wade's voice better than any others on the album.
"Chapter One" brings a different, almost unrecognizable sound to the usual mellow rock that fills Lifehouse albums. Lifehouse is a great album, don't get me wrong. All the songs are equally good, but these two stand out the most. The band stays true to its original sound and will keep the older fans on for another round. After a while, the repetitiveness goes away and the songs get more distinctive. And as Wade sings in "Chapter One," "Take your chances, turn around and go."
