NEWS

A commission to review the structure of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and its constitution will hold an open student forum at 7:30 tonight in 101 Thomas Building.

A new hair salon has found its way to State College -- but ladies beware -- it's for men only -- literally.

Despite midterm season and out-of-class activities, community officials say many students are actively volunteering in the State College.

When most people think of magic, they might visualize cackling witches hunched over steaming cauldrons, chanting evil spells.

With three official meetings left for the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Academic Assembly, members are trying to complete ongoing projects before the end of the semester.

A state law that uses slot machine revenue to decrease local property taxes is sparking local debate about its effect on property owners and renters.

Without the help of a coach, Penn State's Mock Trial Association -- the largest Mock Trial team nationwide -- debated its way to a seventh place finish overall in a national competition last weekend and will face 64 new teams April 8.

"Arms open," a soothing voice said. "Take a deep breath in..."

A former Penn State student and another man have been arrested on charges stemming from a Jan. 5 incident when a 19-year-old female was found unresponsive in a parked vehicle in the HUB Parking Deck.

Penn State's total yearly donations have dropped $30 million, from $181.3 million in 2003 to $151.3 million in 2004, according to a survey conducted by the Council for Aid to Education (CAE).

Only two days into the spring season, State College reverted back to the snow days of weeks past.

Some weather, huh?

SPORTS

It appears as though the wagons have officially circled.

The Penn State baseball team (7-6) may only be two victories away from its best start in five years -- but it'll have to get past Bucknell first.

On a day when he talked about the undefeated 1994 team that "scored about once every two minutes" and the 2002 Capital One Bowl team that "was a really good offensive football team," Penn State coach Joe Paterno hardly needed to say what area of his current squad needs improvement.

It was supposed to be the Hollywood ending for the "good guy." He's got the girl, but he just couldn't get the gold.

When a casual observer watches volleyball, it sometimes helps to relate the game's many quirks and positional roles to certain aspects of other sports. When trying to explain the role and responsibilities of a setter, perhaps the best inter-sport comparison is to those of a quarterback. If that is the case, then Penn State setter Dan O'Dell is like a Michael Vick -- possessing the ability to beat other teams in more than just the traditional role of his position.

Maaria Husain wouldn't have believed you if you told her four years ago that she would be in this position.

ARTS

The Bullet Parade. The Marauders. Katsu. Tokyo Vertigo. No Points Scored.

From now until the end of the semester, if you are in the library and need a study break, or if you are just cutting through from the mall to Curtain Road, take a moment to check out the photography exhibit in the main lobby.

A happy blues singer should be an oxymoron, but Ann Rabson won't see it that way.

It's getting harder and harder to breath as Maroon 5's Penn State visit quickly approaches.

The Donnas could kick Maroon 5's collective skinny bum. This I know. I mean, the Donnas play rock 'n' roll; it's loud, it's bawdy and it's cheeky as heck, so that kicking bum scenario isn't really up for debate.

Bra shopping can end in one of many things -- money spent, normal post-shopping joy, tears of frustration, satisfaction, or the most common: loathing of Gisele.

Reese Witherspoon began her acting career before she was legally anything (at the mere age of 15) in the brilliantly touching film The Man in the Moon.

You might never have had any interest in Mötley Crüe or in any of the band's music.

How do you get through to someone who is seemingly incapable of understanding another human being?

As many over the age of 21 know, Roustabout! is often held at the Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave. in downtown State College. However, this Tuesday, there will be a few changes to the weekly performance.

You don't have to wait until the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts to buy earrings, paintings or handmade clothing from your favorite local artists.

So if you're just a little bit tired of having to choose between College or Canyon every single waking night, what do you do?

Several area chefs agree the emergence of spring compels a change in cooking styles and presentation, but often the change in season on the calendar does not coincide with the growing season of local producers.

Rock for Choice is definitely about the music, they say, but talk to any of the members of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA), and that heated vocal exigency comes across a lot stronger when discussing a woman's right to choose than when discussing low-key acoustic folk-rock.

Arts in brief

Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., will feature Bill Filer. Specials include happy hour from 10 p.m. to midnight with half-priced well liquor (231-4745).
