Senior Kristen Burke was named the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) Player of the Week after scoring a career-high six goals in the 14-13 upset of No. 1 Princeton last Saturday at Princeton. In addition to the ALC honors, Burke also was named the womenslacrosse.com National Player of the Week for her efforts.
Burke scored a six goals, including the game-winner in triple overtime, in then-No. 10 Penn State's upset of Princeton. Burke scored off a pass from senior Emily Chambers with just 1:22 remaining in the third extra session for the victory. She scored six goals on seven shots while also adding an assist for a game-high seven points.
Burke, a native of Severna Park, Md., returns to her home state this weekend when Penn State plays in the ACC-ALC Challenge in Annapolis, Md., tomorrow and Sunday. The Lions take on No. 11 Maryland at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Beaver Stadium will host its first night game in three seasons next fall when Big Ten rival Ohio State visits State College on Oct. 8.
Either ESPN or ESPN2 will televise the game, marking the first time the border rivals have played each other at night. The contest will begin at either 7 p.m. and air on ESPN2 or 7:45 p.m. and air on ESPN. A determination on the kick time may not be made until 12 days prior to the contest.
The Nittany Lions' last night home game was a 40-7 win against Nebraska in 2002. Penn State will be playing a home night game on ESPN for the first time since 1993 against Rutgers.
The telecast is the first announced television appearance of the 2005 season for Penn State. Future Penn State contests may be selected by the networks under the six- and 12-day provisions of their contracts with the Big Ten.
Penn State and Ohio State will be meeting for the 13th straight year since the Nittany Lions began Big Ten play in 1993. The home team has won 10 of 12 meetings; the overall series is tied, 10-10.
Penn State will be playing at least one regular-season night game for the sixth consecutive season. Penn State played night road games at Minnesota and Boston College last fall.
Senior guard Tanisha Wright has been named to The Associated Press All-America third team. This is the second All-America nod for Wright, who recently was named to the USBWA All-America first team.
LSU's Seimone Augustus led all vote-getters, and was a unanimous first-team pick, along with Kansas State's Kendra Wecker, Duke's Monique Curry, Ohio State's Jessica Davenport and TCU's Sandora Irvin.
Wright, Notre Dame's Jacqueline Batteast, North Carolina's Ivory Latta, Texas's Tiffany Jackson, DePaul's Khara Smith and Baylor's Steffanie Blackmon make up the third team.
Wright, the Big Ten's leading scorer this season, helped lead Penn State to a 19-11 record and four wins against top-10 opponents. She finished her career with 1,995 points, fourth in program history.
