Don't dismiss book based on one scene
I agree with Bob Graybill that rape must not be tolerated ("Calling feminism today illogical is not logical," March 23). At the same time, to criticize an entire book like Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and its conclusion based on the rape scene is wrong. Whether you think that scene is rape or not, it does not invalidate the broader conclusion of the book. You don't even have to agree with the book's general conclusion, but you should be able to analyze the book for its main conclusion, not for its scene on rape. And before you criticize Lauren Warner for condemning her professor for "not supporting the book or scene," read the article again ("Feminism should not trump academia or logic," March 21). She criticizes the professor for being unable to rationally analyze - either in support or in disagreement -- the book's broader conclusion without being blinded by one scene of the book. Even if the professor acknowledges the rape scene as a flaw of the book, she should still be a scholar and analyze the book for its main conclusion, despite the rape scene. The issue here is the book's main conclusion, not one scene. Raffi Andonian
