New salon stylists cut hair 'For Men Only'

A new hair salon has found its way to State College -- but ladies beware -- it's for men only -- literally.

Tracy Ferrell, owner of For Men Only, 125 E. Beaver Ave., brought her business to State College last week because she believes State College is becoming more progressive.

For Men Only is the first male hair salon located in State College and currently offers a masculine setting that caters to those men who are interested in receiving a stylish haircut, Ferrell said.

"Men are becoming just as vain as women," Ferrell added.

She said that although For Men Only, which currently has another location in Williamsport, may not seem like a novelty now, she believes it will be well received after some time.

"There are more professional and established men that can now afford to pamper themselves," Ferrell said.

"A lot of younger guys are coloring [their hair], using more products and waxing their backs to feel more groomed," she added.

The men's hair salon offers services that include haircuts, mini facials and scalp massages as well as ESPN and news channels that cater to men's interests, she added.

Rob Replogle, a hair stylist at Silver Scissors Styling Salon, 159 S. Garner St., said although women are notorious for going to hair salons, men are just as picky when it comes to hair.

"It's a metrosexual world right now," he said. "I have men that color their hair more than women."

However, Replogle said he thinks For Men Only alienates women and is not the best business move.

"Women are the backbone of hair, and Penn State is made up of women and a lot of sororities," Replogle said. "If we want a place where men can talk about women, it's called a barbershop."

Shai Tinghman, manager of For Men Only, 125 E. Beaver Ave., styles the hair of Kenrick Hartman (freshman-civil engineering).

Cody Bair (sophomore-psychology) said he thinks that it's become more socially acceptable for a man to get his hair cut in a salon rather than in a barbershop.

"We are moving away from the mentality that hair salons are for women and barbershops are for men," he said.

Ferrell said her business is different than a barbershop in the sense that For Men Only has only female stylists instead of male barbers.

She added that although For Men Only does not turn away women, the salon does not promote women's styles and will not assure a haircut as good as they can give a man.

"We just want women to put themselves in a man's position," Ferrell said. "We offer an atmosphere that makes men feel comfortable."

Crissy Mitinger, part owner of Hair Loft by Charles, 419 E. Calder Way, said that although barbershops tend to usually be male-dominated, she does not think For Men Only is a bad idea.

"I think it will go over well with male college students," she said.

Lori Shero (freshman-actuarial sciences) said she does not think it's weird for men to be more aware of how they groom themselves.

"That's what society has created," she said.

Bair said although a salon specializing in men's hair may be ideal for many men, he expects some gender controversy.

"I think because of the diversity at Penn State, For Men Only will be received well, but I definitely believe that there will be a controversy over the fact that it is only for men," Bair said.
