The Donnas are a female rock group with six albums to their name. They are best known for their hit song "Take It Off."
With Maroon 5's recent success, BJC sales and marketing director Bernie Punt was excited to book them for a show in State College.
"[Maroon 5] is gaining popularity," he said. "They have a strong CD and five songs that receive regular air play on the radio. That much exposure has really helped them."
Punt explained how the show came about.
"Our programming committee asked for input about certain bands six to eight months ago," he said. "Maroon 5 was suggested because they were becoming more popular. We put in a bid for them and luckily, we were successful."
Punt said booking bands in advance can be risky.
"When we book bands, it is unclear whether or not there will still be interest in them at the time of the show," he said. "I think the fact that Maroon 5 just won a Grammy will create more interest in the group. The Donnas will also make the bill more attractive."
The University Park Allocation Committee (UPAC) worked with the BJC staff to help this event take place.
"Every spring the BJC asks for a sum of money to fund student discounted shows," UPAC chairman Tom Truong said.
"We allocate them money for at least one student show. The BJC staff picks the shows, but we make it possible to charge less for student tickets," Punt added.
University Park students were able to purchase tickets for the show at the discounted price of $9.75.
Punt said about 15 percent of University Park students are expected to make the most of the offer.
Truong agreed with Punt and expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Jordan Center staff.
"Students really seem to enjoy the lower ticket prices," he said. "The BJC staff spends a lot of time on program planning and use student feedback to help them select the bands that come here. There is a lot of hard work on the part of the BJC staff to get bands to the university."
Some Penn State students are looking forward to the upcoming concert.
"I'm really excited," Samira Shihab (freshman-psychology) said. "We usually don't get bands like this in State College. I think this show is going to be popular because [Maroon 5's] music is more mainstream and more aimed at college kids."
Shihab put in time to get good seats, but she said it was worth it.
"I waited in line for a few hours to get tickets close to the stage," she said. "It should be a really great show."
