Walker speech left much to be desired
Alice Walker delivered a disappointing lecture Monday. As if she didn't plan a speech, Walker stepped up to the podium and read the sign near the microphone, "Do not move microphone." She continued to verbally meander about three subjects: healing, Michael Jackson and Terri Schiavo. Her thoughts on healing were childish; she claimed that when something is hurt, it heals faster when you kiss it. Her opinions on Michael Jackson's self-mutilation were unoriginal. Walker ended her spiel on current evens by talking about the Terri Schiavo controversy. She wrongly called her Linda Schiavo. Walker transitioned to her poetry and read six pieces of her work. As she read her poetry in her monotone voice, she paused between pages. When her reading came to an end, Matt Midles, the chairman of the DSS, informed the audience that Ms. Walker would now answer questions. Walker interrupted Midles, claiming that she was not done. Walker made a flaky comment on beauty ended her lecture. She allowed the audience to ask questions. One woman lauded her work but asked why she did not incorporate more current events. Walker called the woman "arrogant" and embarrassed her. In an effort to clear her name, the woman again praised Walker's work and apologized. Walker replied, "Kiss yourself." After her aimless lecture, her poor reading of six measly poems and her rude dialogue with the audience, I would tell Ms. Walker where to kiss. Unfortunately, I don't think the Collegian will print it. Daniel Rau
