Letter to the Editor
Letter questions GOP 'small gov't' rhetoric

This is in response to the letter to the editor entitled "Thank Republicans for saving Schiavo," March 22.

I would also like to thank Republicans for continually making it so easy to not be a Republican.

In the biggest hypocritical political move I've seen since Bush got reelected, Republicans -- champions of small government, defenders of the "sanctity of marriage"-- shoved their collective, pompous selves into the marriage of Terri and Michael Schiavo.

Not only did Congress step up the double standard, but everyone's favorite knucklehead, "Dubya," took time out from vacationing -- again -- to save a life. Remember that this is coming from one of the biggest proponents of the death penalty.

I have always marveled at how a group can at once say that they defend freedom and at the same time refuse to give that person the right to make choices (a la gay rights, abortion, etc.). I guess choice only pertains to which gun to use. Even though Terri did not fill out any sort of advanced directives, what business is it of Congress to intervene in this case?

As if the 19 judges that already ruled in favor of Terri's husband weren't enough to seal the deal.

It all makes me so glad that Republicans in Congress and the president are taking time out of running this country to do important things like busting Mark McGwire and exploiting a woman who, according to her doctors, hasn't felt or thought anything for 15 years all to push a very evidently theocratic agenda.
