Guinness is great, definitely not sludge
This is in response to "ID troubles prevent student from enjoying local bar scene" from March 17. This rant has nothing to do really with the main point of the article, but just to address the issue of my favorite drink, Guinness. The writer, Paul Thompson, addresses the beverage as "pint after pint of sludgy Guinness." I beg to differ. Guinness is a non-carbonated beverage and is actually lighter than water because of its alcohol content. Guinness is also only 125 calories per serving, compared to roughly 150-160 calories of the average full-flavor beer. This is because of fewer carbohydrates, and fewer carbohydrates mean less density than the average beer. Couple that to no carbonation and you have a pretty watery drink. Most people I guess get the idiotic sense that Guinness is "sludgy" because of the creamy head. I'll give you that. But the actual beverage you're drinking is lighter than water. Get that through your head, people! Yu-Cheng Chen
