Demanding equal treatment not selfish
My letter is in regards to a letter printed in the The Daily Collegian ("All ethnicities blessed to live in the United States, Feb. 25"). Mr. Wilson, although I agree that we should all appreciate living in a free country, I strongly disagree with your message that we are "selfish" to demand equal treatment. Just because there are other places in this world that are worse-off, that is not an excuse for injustice here in our own country. You mentioned, "The fault lies in the hands of us all." Well then, Mr. Wilson, since you are admitting responsibility, what are you doing to help solve this problem? You were correct with your statement that the country has grown, but that the changes "didn't happen overnight." Need I remind you that these changes happened because a few daring individuals decided not to accept the way things were, but to change them for the better? Let me enrich you with a quote from civil-rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who said in his Letter from Birmingham Jail, "We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people." Your request for silence among those who are fed-up with the harsh words of others is the most pathetic of all. The only people who are "severely ungrateful" are those like you, Mr. Wilson. Because while others fight for equality, justice and a better life for all, you do nothing, and history has proved to us all that when nothing is challenged or questioned, nothing changes.
