Gospel choir 'steps' as one family

For The Collegian

The United Soul Ensemble (USE), a student gospel choir and step team, is one of the oldest organizations on campus -- one that encourages students to become a part of, not only their group, but ultimately a member of their family.

"The legacy of USE is there because when we come together, you find a family and people who truly care about you," said USE Vice President Nicole Shepard.

The ensemble has been an organization at Penn State since it was founded in 1971 when students gathered together in a dorm to sing gospel music. The USE currently has about 35 members, and becoming a member is easy. Commitment to the group lies solely on attending practices and performances.

"There is no audition process," said current USE president Gareth Murray.

"We encourage anyone to come that loves music and God, and isn't ashamed to show it," Murray added.

The USE also includes the step team Alpha Omega, an affiliate organization that performs with the choir.

"The step team is not a Greek organization, but we do carry two greek letters as our 'sign.' That is a good part about the step team. If you like to step, but you may or may not be thinking about pledging, you're more than welcome to join. There is no trial, pledge or tryout process," said Carol Seals (sophomore-African and African American studies), a step team co-captain.

Christina Harrison (freshman-music composition) said being able to get involved and use her talents was her favorite part of becoming a member of USE.

"I probably won't remember all the songs we've sung, but the relationships I've made will stay with me forever," Murray said.

The keyboard, bass, drums, trombone and trumpet are also incorporated into the group's songs.

"Of all the groups I've joined as a freshman, the choir is the only one that I am still a part of," said saxophonist Wole Adegbonmire (senior-economics).

Members of the organization are also involved in various other student groups including fraternities, sororities, and other student organizations.

"The last three Mr. Black Penn State winners have been members of the USE," Shepard said. "Though we may be few in number, it's always nice to know that we have an ongoing legacy."

The ensemble holds one major performance each semester in the Schwab Auditorium, but also performs at various other campus events.

The USE practices at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center's main worship hall, and at 6:30 p.m. each Friday in 137 Reber Building.

"Even if you don't intend to sing, drop by our practices to listen or even hang out. The doors are always open," Murray said.
