NEWS

A small subculture of Penn State has been whisked off campus, though most students outside of the film and video major probably haven't even noticed the change.

HERSHEY -- Penn State's Board of Trustees approved the construction of two buildings at the Hershey Medical Center, unveiled a new forensic science major and appointed architects for a Life Sciences II Building at a meeting Friday.

Abortion rights advocates spent hours holding signs that read "Honk 4 choice," "If you cut off my reproductive choice, can I cut off yours?" and "The vows of abstinence break more easily than latex condoms," on Saturday.

The cha cha, samba, rumba, waltz, pasa doble and jive inspired intense gazes, swirling skirts and seamless footwork as dancers competed in the second annual Keystone Classic dance competition.

This year, alcohol-related arrests declined on St. Patrick's Day compared to last year's numbers, possibly because of increased police enforcement.

Yesterday's first day of spring has students and local business owners gearing up for the change in season.

Farzad Sharif remembers celebrating Noe-Rooz, the Persian New Year, when he was a Penn State student 15 years ago.

About 60 people gathered at the Allen Street gates Saturday for a candlelight vigil to honor the second anniversary of the war in Iraq.

Students and community members learned Saturday at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center how to become a conscientious objector to a military draft.

Pushker Kharecha said that while the U.S. government intended to liberate the people of Iraq, the current occupation is actually denying them basic human rights.

HERSHEY -- Penn State's Board of Trustees approved preliminary plans for a new baseball stadium to be built at University Park, adjacent to Beaver Stadium and the Bryce Jordan Center.

It's about midnight on Saturday and an audience of loud and boisterous Penn Staters half-pay attention to an acoustic guitarist doing covers on stage.

SPORTS

The Penn State cycling team had a strong weekend of racing, taking home fifth place overall in the Pagoda Nittany Classic races on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13.

The Penn State crew team looks hungry while anticipating its 10th season as an organization. After a good fall season, a winter of dominating indoor rowing competitions, and a complete sweep of the University of Pittsburgh and Sacred Heart in scrimmages, the team is feeling confident and limitless in expectations.

Ryan McGarry started out as a high school cross country runner and track standout. He received scholarship offers from a number of schools. He eventually decided to attend Southern Methodist University, where, as a freshman during the cross country season, he had an extremely successful year, even scoring points for his team by placing in the Texas Relays.

The Penn State softball team won the Kia Classic Championship.

Often overlooked as a result the vast variety of sporting events that go on here in State College, the Penn State Ultimate Frisbee teams tend to keep relatively low profiles. The sport, however, remains alive and well. Both the men's and women's teams made the Collegiate Top 25 Rankings of the 2005 spring season, released Wednesday by The Ultimate Players Association (UPA).

Both times the opponent was the No. 1-ranked team in the country. Both times were on the road. And both times the Nittany Lions came home with a victory.

In between her matches during the Penn State women's tennis team's victory against Lehigh on Friday, the Nittany Lions No. 1 player Maaria Husain could be seen walking around wrapped head to toe in an oversized blanket.

Many people wonder what kind of workouts Penn State sports teams use. For those fans, Paul Harrison offers some insight. Harrison, head strength and conditioning coach at Penn State, is in charge of every team sport's strength and conditioning program, with the exception of football. His workout has often been compared to the HIT (high intensity training) workout, which consists of doing an overall body workout, with one set per exercise, each done until the athlete can't complete any more repetitions.

Go big -- or go home.

It was weird for Lars Tiffany to look across the field on Saturday and try to come to grips with the fact that he was now coaching against players who he'd spent the last four years recruiting.

The Penn State men's volleyball team taught a lesson in punishment this weekend at Rec Hall.

The Penn State women's gymnastics team showed off for the home crowd one last time this year. Once again the Nittany Lions used great beam and floor routines to pull away from Rutgers, Temple and William & Mary.

The Penn State women's swimming and diving team finished in 13th place at the NCAA Championship meet at Purdue University with 87 points, despite sending the biggest squad in school history and fifth-largest in the country.

Batting has normally been a sore subject for the Penn State baseball team -- but that's beginning to change.

ST. LOUIS -- Finally, the brackets have been completed.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The party wasn't in the student section.
