Difficult school work should get its due
It was nice seeing a front-page story on architecture students and the insane hours they put into studio. As an architecture major myself, I can personally say that nothing in the article is an exaggeration or a special-case scenario. In architecture, if you want to do well -- if you even want to pass -- you need to spend those kinds of hours in studio working. Bret Peters' quote that an architectural education is a "system that's outside the university experience" particularly rang true. Last August, I was thrilled to start college. My parents always told me these were to be the best years of my life, and I was excited (as most incoming freshmen are) to finally be able to have the fun that seemed so far away during high school. And, here I am, working for 30 hours straight as a freshman. Whether becoming an architect is worth the loss of the "college experience" or not, I'm not sure, but actually receiving some kind of recognition for the work we put in is helpful. John Marciante
