PSU looks to play to potential
Baseball

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State baseball team (1-3) may have started off on the wrong foot, but it will have plenty of chances to turn it around over Spring Break.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Fresno, Calif., to compete in six games at the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic. Each of those games will offer Penn State an opportunity to make up for last weekend's sub-par finish.

"We feel we should be 3-1 instead of 1-3," senior infielder Mike Milliron said last week. "It's discouraging, but it's early."

While the Lions ended last weekend on a low note, the team thought the results weren't indicative of its performance. Milliron pointed toward some bad bounces, and Penn State coach Robbie Wine believed the cold weather might have negatively affected his pitching staff.

Regardless, the Lions didn't exactly get blown out of the water -- they lost two games by a total of two runs.

Penn State will get its first crack at redeeming itself on Monday, when it takes on Monmouth.

The Hawks (0-3) may be winless this season, but their record is a bit misleading. All three of Monmouth's losses came against Central Florida (12-2), the No. 26 team in the nation.

Junior infielder Nick Massari paces the Hawks' offense and already has two home runs to his name. And while the Hawks have a few other sluggers capable of going the distance, the Lions are already experiencing some woes on offense. Matt Cavagnaro, Scott Gummo and Clint Eury are a combined 1-for-37 in the batter's box this season.

Overall, though, it appears the Lions simply haven't operated well in clutch situations. Wine hinted last weekend that his squad even appeared lax in the middle innings. Penn State's opponents are batting .344 with runners on base. And with runners in scoring position, the Lions are allowing the opposition to hit an astounding .395. By comparison, Penn State is batting .257 with runners in scoring position.

The Lions are also scheduled to play Gonzaga, Dallas Baptist and three other teams to be determined in the tournament.
