Which of these cities does not belong: Rio de Janeiro; Las Vegas; Cancun; Baltimore. Hint -- this is not a trick question.
Of course the simple answer is Baltimore, without a doubt.
While many of my friends spend next week traveling around the globe, I plan to spend my spring break in the same place I have spent it for the past two years: at home.
As many of my friends depart for their annual voyages, I am reminded of vacations past that have resembled work all too closely for me. For whatever reason, I always get stuck with planning trips with my friends.
They seem to think because I actually have flown more than twice in my life I am an expert on making plane, hotel and rental car reservations.
Quite frankly, this responsibility is one I would rather not have.
I hate always being the one to book everything; and I hate having my name on the reservation when everyone gets a little tipsy and decides to trash the hotel room.
I simply hate all the work I need to put into a good vacation.
Once the planning for the trip is done, you would think my responsibilities would be over.
Unfortunately, they never seem to end. I still need to be the "responsible" one who tells all the drunks to stop urinating off the balcony or else we will have to sleep on the street.
Even during the sober daytime I am the one to which everyone comes when we are deciding what to do.
Which beach do we hit up today? Long Beach or Huntington?
I don't know, just ask Jen.
Sure the sun, sand and surf have quite a lot to offer a stressed college student like me, but then again, so does home.
Home provides many of the amenities I would be paying for at a resort for a very nice bargain.
I have the luxury of my own bed, free food and laundry, and even the opportunity to score cash from my caring parents.
Plus, I can get caught up on some sleep, bum around in sweatpants during the day and hit the town at night. This will actually be the first spring break for which I will be 21.
Sure I would love to spend a few nights at some happening tiki bars in the Caribbean, but I think I actually prefer going home.
I have concluded spring break trips are more work than they're worth.
A lot of times the weather down south is still cold and far from ideal for the beach.
And I would much rather not have to worry about actually waking up and doing things (or people, as seems to be the case in many stories I hear) during the day.
I do recognize, however, that not all travelers will be lazing on the beach for the entire week.
I have personally thought those trips sponsored by clubs such as Habitat for Humanity over spring break were pretty cool.
Rather than wasting away the week, I could build a home for the less fortunate, and at least be a productive member of society during my vacation.
Because I have already made my plans for this year, maybe next year I will look into a trip like this.
One of the other main reasons I have decided to pass on an exotic spring break is that I am taking a couple of big trips this summer.
I have made travel arrangements for several of my friends and me to go to southern California for a week.
After worrying about how we're getting here, there and everywhere, I am exhausted from trip planning.
I actually prefer to travel during the summer, because I am not as busy and I actually have time to prepare and pack before leaving for vacation.
Spring break trips seem like they are a ton of fun, but where is the time to relax?
If you go Saturday to Saturday, then you really only get one day to chill without having to worry about classes and the real world.
Home is where the heart is, or at least it is where my heart is. I am involved in a long-distance relationship, and breaks are really the only time we have to see each other.
Also, I am pretty sure I would be in a lot of trouble if I were to go off with my friends and forget about those responsibilities.
What rational person would actually want the burden of making plans, traveling and playing the adult when they could relax at home and play the kid while someone else plays the grown-up?
For me, the costs clearly outweigh the benefits in terms of taking a trip, so if you need me next week, you can find me livin' it up in Baltimore.
