Lady Ruggers to say 'cheerio' to English foes
The women's rugby team raised its own funds to take a 10-day trip to play in England during spring break.

The Penn State women's rugby team will trade pizza and pop for tea and krumpets tomorrow as the Lady Ruggers begin their playing tour of England.

There won't be any sandy beaches or palm trees.

It's just 10 days of blood, sweat and muddy fields awaiting the Lady Ruggers, and they wouldn't have it any other way.

Penn State will be going through training sessions nearly every day and is set to compete in four matches against some of the top university and club teams in England.

The Lady Ruggers will square off against Brunel University, Nottingham Trent University, Loughborough University and Richmond Club's B side.

Of all Penn State's opponents opponents, Loughborough and Richmond pose the biggest threat for the Lady Ruggers.

Loughborough was runner-up in last year's University Championship and Richmond is one of the upper-echelon club teams in England.

The trip is about more than just playing rugby for the team, though.

The Lady Ruggers will have time to do some sight-seeing around England.

The team will even attend a tsunami benefit match between Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere All-Stars while on the overseas trip.

"Even though we are a relatively close-knit group, spending 10 days on the road playing rugby and laughing together really does draw us closer together," Lady Rugger Shelley White said.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the Lady Ruggers will be traveling overseas for spring break.

The trip helps display the squad's dedication to their sport. The players funded the whole trip on their own, and almost the entire team will make the journey.

The Lady Ruggers had one final tuneup scrimmage Sunday night, before embarking on their British expedition.

They came out strong and put a beating on Lock Haven University, 44-5, at Holuba Hall in a match where both their A- and B-sides played.

Penn State received scoring tries from Maggie Reed, Emily Donaldson, Amber Benlian, Teri O'Brien, Sally Gimbert, Karley McVerry, Tricia DiBasilio and Alison Worman. Amy Manidis and Allurie Kephart each tallied a conversion in the victory.
