Leaders should end confrontational ways
I find it a little disturbing that once again Penn State finds itself involved in another heated discussion over the racial treatment of students of color at the University Park campus. Although this issue will never go away until the entire country embarks in an open discussion over the legacy of slavery in America, incidents and provocations toward the university do nothing to improve the image of Black Americans a whole. As a former member of the Village in 2001, I would like to urge the current members of the Black Caucus to sit down and read the previous agreement between the university and the Black Caucus. I also urge that instead of working from a position of adversary to work from a position of positive negotiation. Before demanding things that you want, go into battle knowing before hand where you can win and possibly not win. Choose your battles carefully. I believe that there are already things in place to deal with issues of race, allow these policies time to work. Also, sometimes you can accomplish more by quietly working in a less confrontational manner than by an in-your-face approach. Just a thought. Robin Purcell
