Gym wait lines to appear on web

Collegian Staff Writer

CORRECTION: This article gave the incorrect address for the Undergraduate Student Government-sponsored gym monitor Web site.

The Web site, www.psu.edu/dept/psustrength, will launch after spring break.

Students who are sick of waiting to use on-campus workout facilities will not have to exercise as much patience after they return from spring break.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) will launch a Web site that lists the estimated wait times for on-campus fitness centers, including the MBNA Fitness Center, the Intramural Building fitness center, Rec Hall's recreational weight room, the McCoy Natatorium's fitness loft and Rec Hall's athletic weight room.

Phil Keller, White Building facility coordinator, said lines have been a problem since day one.

"We always hear complaints when there is any kind of line for anything," Keller said.

USG Vice President Luke Adams said the Web site will list each gym's occupancy so students will know if the gym is crowded. The Web site will also include the building occupancy, fitness schedules and hours of operation, he said.

USG's original plan was to install a Web cam in the White Building so students could survey the wait lines from their computers. However, Adams said there were too many problems with that proposal.

"The cost of camera is miniscule, and the wires are not really that expensive," he said. "But to have somebody break down a wall in the White Building and rewire, it would cost $10,000 to put one camera in."

Listing the approximate wait times will be more accurate than trying to judge the line length from the Web cam anyway, Adams said.

The Web cam was one of Adams and USG President Galen Foulke's campaign platforms last spring. Adams said when campaigning, he wanted to come up with an idea that would make a difference to an average student.

"It was definitely one of more popular ideas [Foulke] and I came up with," Adams said.

Katie McCormick (freshman-aerospace engineering) said the Web site should help students with time management.

"It's hard for freshmen, because of the whole mindset about gaining the freshman 15," McCormick said. "And when you have to stand in line and wait, it defeats the whole purpose."

McCormick said the Web site could include more information to help students. "They should also incorporate a wait time for certain areas of the gym," she said. "Sometimes you can hop on the free weights very easily, but then you wait in line for another 10 minutes in the cardio room."

Adams said the Web site is almost complete and should be available soon after spring break.

"We already have [a mock website] up [at the same address]," he said. "Other than maybe a couple of additions, this doesn't seem like something that is going to take a long time."

The Web site for the gym monitor is www.xsalta.com/strengthweb/index.html.
