Still not too late to take a break
Local travel agencies say there are spring break trips available and some are still quite affordable.

For The Collegian

Most college students procrastinate, and it's no surprise that those habits extend into making plans for one of the most important weeks in spring semester: spring break.

Although some trip packages have additional costs due to late booking, some deals are still available for the spring break procrastinator.

"Everyone is still coming in doing last minute [plans]," said Margi Erway of STA Travel, 104 HUB.

Sandy Berardis of Centre for Travel, 114 Heister St., agreed.

"We do get some [students] that book at the last minute," Berardis said.

Students at Penn State usually book early, making it easier to find better prices and packages.

"Penn State usually has a lot of people book early with spring break. This is good because if you wait too long there isn't a lot of availability or a lot of options," said Colleen Jansson, an STA Travel adviser.

These last-minute travel plans usually create an increase in the trip's price. Airfare usually creates the largest price increase, especially when booking a flight a week or less prior to spring break.

"Airfare is very expensive at the last minute," said Susan Abruzzo, an agent for Centre for Travel.

Josh Mason, another STA adviser, said students who look to get a flight out of State College the weekend before or after spring break probably won't have much luck. Last-minute reservations also require quicker payment, which can sometimes number into the thousands, and is due no more than 24 hours after scheduling the trip.

Most trips are set up in payment plans, instead of a lump-sum payment that can be hard for the average college student to cover, especially at the last minute. While this may seem discouraging, there are other options that don't cost as much for students because they cut out the expensive airfare fees.

STA Travel has seen a lot of students taking advantage of their package to Panama City, Fla. Erway said the company's most affordable trip is to Panama City, which costs about $440 for airfare and accomodations.

"A lot [of students] are booking the Panama City trip," Mason said.

Students have continued to schedule trips, and the employees of STA believe it's because of the affordability in the last minute plans or students realizing that they do have the funds for the trip. Some of the bookings occur when "people realize they have the money," Jansson said.

The amount of money spent is a big factor in determining where to go at the last minute, Mason said.

"Students want to go someplace where they don't have to spend a lot of money," he said.

While many students have booked their trips months in advance, and some are spending their breaks at home, others find it comforting to know that last minute deals are available.

"If I were going on spring break, it's great to know that I could make reservations at the last minute," Brandon Levan (senior-political science) said.
