PSU athletic programs are in steep decline
I read on that men's head basketball Coach Ed DeChellis no longer had the answers for his team to win ("DeChellis questioning self as frustrating losses pile up," March 1). This seems to be quite the trend in the two most visible sports here at Penn State - football and basketball. JoePa complained about not having answers for his football squad as well. The combined record of the men's basketball and football teams over the four years I have been at Penn State is 53-106. That is likely the worst record in the Big Ten over the same time period for the two sports. Although nearly all other Penn State athletic programs have seen anywhere from a glimmer of success to national championships, it is basketball and football that attract the most fans, including myself. In order to keep pace with the Big Ten and nation, this university needs to revamp its Athletic Department, beginning with the director, Tim Curley. All of the claims that this is one of the best and most successful institutions for student-athletes to both graduate and play on winning teams are no longer true. What happened to the Penn State of old, keeping ahead of the rest on the field and in the classroom? I am sure that some smart person out there has an idea on how to do just that. Someone please ease my mind before I graduate and move on in May. I would like to come back as an alumnus to see some wins in Beaver Stadium and the Bryce Jordan Center. Sean MacLaughlin
