Free tuition for execs will not stop racism
As much as I am troubled by the recent episodes of bigotry, I am even more troubled by the Black Caucus' reaction ("Officials questioning caucus demands," March 1). It will be a cold day in hell before I am ever convinced that the solution to racism will come by providing Black Caucus members with stipends and their own operating budget. Seriously, who are they trying to kid? If the demands they are making to the university are of such a compelling nature, why do they stand alone in making them? The only thing they are accomplishing out of this whole ordeal is alienating themselves from other student organizations. Now it is not my intention to downplay the events, I am angered by it just like the next person. But it just irritates me that they are quick to blame the university for all of their problems rather than deal with it themselves. As a minority student, I have experienced my own share of bigotry growing up, even some during my time here at Penn State. Rather than blame everyone else for not protecting me and demand compensation, I made it my motivation to better myself and to be successful in my endeavors. This is why I cannot help asking the Black Caucus, "Would you like some cheese with your whine?" What saddens me even more is that their constant complaining with the administration does nothing but give the university a bad name to those outside of the community watching this ordeal unfold. Their selfish demands are counterproductive and it's about time someone stood up to say it. Carlos Coronado
