The No. 16 Penn State wrestling team had nine of 10 wrestlers seeded when the Big Ten released preliminary seeding for the Big Ten Wrestling Championships yesterday. The Nittany Lions head to Iowa City, Iowa, for the conference tournament, Saturday and Sunday at the University of Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena, with the second most seeds of any school.
Eric Bradley, one of four returning champions that will compete, led the Lions as he garnered the No. 2 seed at 184 pounds. Bradley, ranked No. 5 in the nation with a 23-3 record, was seeded behind Illinois' Brian Glynn, who is ranked No. 4 in the nation. Glynn and Bradley have split a pair of one-point matches this season.
Bradley was one of six Penn State wrestlers seeded to advance to the NCAA Championships, March 17-19 in St. Louis, Mo. The Big Ten will qualify 72 men with the top seven finishers in each weight class and two wild cards advancing to the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Nathan Galloway (27-11), a 2003 NCAA qualifier, and freshman Phil Davis (30-6) received No. 4 seeds at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Senior Adam Smith (19-10), a two-time NCAA qualifier making his fourth Big Ten Tournament appearance, was seeded No. 6 at 125. Junior DeWitt Driscoll (26-13), eighth last year, and freshman Bryan Heller (20-13) received No. 7 seeds at 141 and 133, respectively. Junior Joel Edwards (21-12), who moved up to heavyweight in January, sophomore James Yonushonis (13-16), eighth last year, and freshman Jack Decker (19-21) rounded out Penn State's seeds garnering, No. 8 seeds at heavyweight, 197 and 149, respectively. Senior Jarrad Turner (9-20) was unseeded at 165 pounds.
