Letter to the Editor
Racist rhetoric was a threat on Smith's life

The information that was given by Michael Hoster ("Crusade against bigots only turns people away," Feb. 25) was wrong.

First of all, it was not one racist comment. It was a three-week onslaught of racial slurs.

Not to mention that the event that happened to Ed Smith, president of the Black Caucus, was not only a racial slur, but rather a threat to his life, and thus this does incite a police investigation.

Furthermore, one unchecked racist comment yields more racist comments, and eventually violence.

It is unimportant if these individuals come to college with these pre-formulated thoughts.

But it is not their right to broadcast them in a manner that is threatening, and infringes on the rights of others.

So it is in the best interest of every woman, homosexual and minority (who I might add were included in the bigot comments) to have Penn State administration address the problem.

As an African American, who has heard the comments myself, my forefathers did not die fighting racism so that I had to hear these comments at all.

I would ask you to reevaluate your opinions about this matter and try to put yourself in the shoes of those minorities who constantly feel threatened by the hostile environment that has been fostered by this, as you call it, one racial comment.
