Crusade against bigots only turns people away

The recent emphatic obsession with attaining diversity, tolerance, and complete "anti-bigotry" on this campus is largely superfluous.

By the time some students reach college, their core values are fairly to completely solidified on matters of politics, race and religion.

In this event, incessantly pushing and fighting for limitless acceptance of all ethnicities and creeds will only perpetuate the problem.

For example, those who believe homosexuals and minorities are inferior will only be more turned away and agitated with attempts to correct their "flawed" views. Most people will continue to think the way they wish.

I commend some of the recent letters to the Collegian which argue that tolerance must be exemplified on all sides. That means that one racist comment yelled out of a window or one published discriminatory letter should not yield a police investigation or a memo from President Graham Spanier.

Overwhelmingly, telling people that their beliefs are wrong and have to be altered will do nothing but anger them. Clearly this applies to both sides.

The only advice I have is to watch American History X, for this movie entirely illustrates what hate, rage and intolerance can create.
