Most of the world sees the Bible as flawed text
To Mr. Brian Miller: Your letter states that you are a junior at Penn State so I find it surprising that in your studies, you haven't learned that roughly two-thirds of the world is not Christian and does not believe that the Bible is an infallible document. To say that people "should" read the Bible if they disagree with you is arrogant and darkly comical. That aside, you know what? I took your advice, blew the dust off of King James and began to read Leviticus. It does seem to condemn male homosexuality. It also condones slavery, animal sacrifice and stoning. Ever cursed your parents? Leviticus recommends you should be put to death for it. Ever worn a cotton/polyester blend? Eaten bacon? Leviticus says it's wrong. I also seemed to find mentions of homosexuality conspicuously absent from the New Testament. To my knowledge, there is no 11th commandment that states, "thou shalt not be gay." Female sexuality is thought so little of that lesbians fail to even get a mention. Moreover, I recall such gems from the mouth of Jesus himself saying "judge not lest ye be judged," and "love thy neighbor as thyself." For every Christian who uses the Bible to justify slavery, the oppression of women, and most recently, homosexuals, there is one who realizes that we are no longer in the 13th Century and that the Bible was written ages ago, for a culture that is drastically different than ours. These people know that the Bible is subject to interpretation, and don't use it to push an agenda of hate. Anne DeHart
