The first thing you notice is the name.
LCD Soundsystem sounds like the newest home entertainment technology. But let the buyer beware: check out the label before buying something, right?
LCD Soundsystem's self-titled album label reads "dance rock." But don't call it one-dimensional. "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" is dance punk. "Never As Tired As When I'm Waking Up" is dance prog. "Losing My Edge" is dance novelty. Sound repetitive? Well, yeah, it kind of is.
Although the album has a few gems, the 16-track debut sounds like the same drum loop played for 100 minutes with James Murphy going from sugar rush to comatose at random.
The biggest problem is not that the sound is boring.
It's that the band seems disinterested most of the time. It's pretty hard as a listener to get interested in music when the people performing it aren't even digging it. When the band does sound interested, they're good. But those moments are few and far between.
To give the band credit, if you're making a mix CD, one of these songs should be on it ("Give It Up" has an awesome funk groove to it). And the band at least tries to appeal to the masses by offering two versions of "Yeah." There's the "Crass Version" for the simple and the "Pretentious Version" for the snob.
LCD Soundsystem needs to add a warning to its label: "Do Not Exceed Recommended Dosage."
