Lions falter again on road
Men's Basketball

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State men's basketball team snapped a streak last night -- Michigan's 10-game losing stretch, that is.

Thanks to the Nittany Lions (7-19 Big Ten, 1-12), Michigan (13-15, 4-10) picked up its first win since defeating Penn State on Jan. 15 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

With a 63-48 win against the Lions at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Wolverines slipped past Purdue and now sit third-to-last in the Big Ten standings.

Penn State, however, sits pretty comfortably at the absolute bottom of the conference, with nearly a four-year Big Ten road-losing streak still waiting to be snapped.

Penn State came out playing with energy to start the game, showcasing aggressive defense and stellar shooting from freshman guard Danny Morrissey.

Morrissey scored eight of the Lions' first 16 points, giving Penn State a 16-15 advantage with 12:27 remaining in the opening half.

But Michigan guard Dion Harris' 3-point basket, while being double-teamed, gave the Wolverines a 20-16 lead and seemed to foreshadow the remainder of the game.

The Lions couldn't find anyone on their eight-man roster to match up with Harris and Michigan forward Ron Coleman.

The duo finished the game with 40 points, scoring 24 and 16 points, respectively.

"We had a hard time scoring tonight," Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said, according to www.mgoblue.com. "We had a hard time on offense, scoring only 48 points and shooting 40 percent.

"Michigan's scorers scored for them. We let Harris get too many points in the first half and couldn't defend Coleman, either."

The Lions could not cut the lead closer than four after the 8:45 mark of the first half.

In the closing minutes of the first half and the opening minutes of the second half, Michigan went on a 12-2 run. The Lions trailed 34-24 heading into halftime, and subsequently, the Wolverines built a 47-34 lead by the 13:37 mark in the second half.

"Michigan outworked and outplayed us," forward Aaron Johnson said. "They were very unselfish with the ball.

"That is our problem -- we can be very selfish sometimes. Harris had a hell of a game. Michigan only cares about wins, they don't care who scores."

After the hot start, Morrissey finished as the Lions' leading scorer with 14 points, hitting 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

Freshman forward Geary Claxton and Johnson scored 12 and nine points, respectively.

Johnson also reached double figures in rebounds for the first time in five games.
