Readers write about 'hateful' comments on gay photograph
While I don't agree with Chris Kovalchick's characterization of the couple on the front page of the Feb. 16 Collegian as "disgusting and pathetic," I find the some of the responses to his views ridiculous. We live in a society where on any given day you can come into contact with material that you might deem offensive. Pictures of aborted fetus' used to argue against abortion, crosses bathed in urine as art, and even T-shirts celebrating Che Guevara -- these are all hateful and disrespectful to some group. Kovalchick decided to express his disgust at the Collegian running a large picture of a homosexual couple engaged in a display of public affection as news. There are many on this campus who would agree that you're free to do what you want in your own home and life, but that imposing your particular brand of beliefs upon others is wrong. Are those who complain about prayer in the public sector different than those offended by the Kiss-Out? Kovalchick is dismissive and insensitive toward the gay community, but he has not committed a hate crime by stating his disapproval of the gay lifestyle. This was an act of free speech. Those who campaign for tolerance and diversity might do well to remember that tolerance isn't just for the groups and beliefs that you support. Instead of calling Kovalchick a bigot, would it not be more productive to state support for the Collegian's reporting and make a reasoned argument for the LGBTA lifestyle? John Creek
