NEWS

Ninety-three-year old Grace Holderman told a crowd of people gathered in the Paterno Library yesterday afternoon what Penn State was like when she was a student 75 years ago.

In response to recent allegations of racism on campus, about 150 students gathered in the HUB-Robeson Center yesterday to call on the university to change the way acts of intolerance are handled.

Members of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate said last night that the campus climate at Penn State is not welcoming to minorities, citing recent events.

Imagine 8,000 students, all of whom live on campus at University Park, disappearing in one day.

Although worrying about Social Security is not a top priority for most college students, many will have a chance to improve their understanding of how President George W. Bush's new proposal will affect their future.

Managing a projected surplus of treated sewage water in the borough was discussed at last night's State College Borough Council meeting.

Although the Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) faces a financial predicament, officials said proposals for the new parking facilities in State College and on campus will not be affected.

Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Academic Assembly is asking for recommendations on how to improve diversity on campus, following a recent roundtable discussion.

A 23-year-old Penn State student reported being assaulted on the 200 block of North Burrowes Street yesterday morning, State College Police said.

SPORTS

Not since 1966, when Ohio State took the title, has a northern team won an NCAA baseball championship.

Captain Planet was always quick to remind kids that "the power is yours!"

The guys are just hanging out at a typical Monday afternoon practice -- smiling, telling jokes, even taking a half-court shot or two for fun.

Editor's Note: This is the second in a two-part series looking at life on the road with the Penn State men's volleyball team.

In sports, people always talk about stepping up. Whether that means coming though in a pressure situation, elevating one's game, or even filling a leadership role, the idea is always there.

The Penn State women's golf team is off to a rough start in the Puerto Rico Lady Classic in Dorado, Puerto Rico. After two days of competition the Nittany Lions find themselves in last place with one more day to go.

For collegiate swimmers and divers, conference and NCAA meets are the end of the road. This weekend the Penn State men's swimming and diving team will compete at the Big Ten championships in Minnesota, one of the highest level meets in which swimmers will ever have the chance to compete.

When you've got a good thing going, you tend to want to keep it going. The 693 points the Penn State women's swimming team accumulated to win the Big Ten Championships in a dominating performance is the good thing.

The season ended for the Penn State Lady Icers in pretty much the same way the whole second half went, with a close defeat to Bates College in which the offense let the team down.

Chris Matteo slowly shuffled to the locker room, wincing with every step. He leaned against the wall for a moment to catch his breath.

If there's anything the Penn State wrestling team has learned over these last five days, it's that you cannot work like you did in high school and expect to win. Example: Friday's 21-17 loss to Ohio State.

There's not a single day of the Penn State men's basketball team's 7-18 season when freshman guard Danny Morrissey doesn't think about Kyle Beigie.

When you first see Travis Parker, you're probably thinking what a lot of other people are thinking: "I want to stay on this guy's good side."

Penn State's Derek Wake has been invited to participate in the National Football League's Scouting Combine, which begins tomorrow in Indianapolis.

Two former Penn State women's lacrosse players have been selected to the 24-member U.S. Women's World Cup Training Team that will begin preparing for the 2005 International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA), U.S. Lacrosse recently announced.

Gabe Bernstein, who was a senior co-captain on the Penn State men's soccer team this season, was selected in the fourth round of the annual Major Indoor Soccer League College Draft, held yesterday via teleconference.

ARTS

The Deathray Davies hail from Texas, so you might think they'd be country bumpkins, but they're not. Nah, they play retro garage pop akin to The Kinks. Then there's central Pennsylvanian chanteuse Dawn Kinnard, whose first album was country in the Lucinda Williams sense of the word. But she's over that, and moving on to less twangy pastures.

Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., will feature Magic Hat beer and The Twinz at 10 p.m. Specials include happy hour from 10 p.m. to midnight (231-4745).
