In those games, Penn State tied the Bobcats 2-2 in the second game after falling 5-1 in the first game. After the tie, the Lady Icers were optimistic that they would be able to turn things around in the playoffs.
Unfortunately for the team, though, Penn State was faced with a bit of bad luck as soon as the ACHA released the schedule. The Lady Icers were lined up to face Rhode Island in the semifinals of the playoffs in Amherst, Mass. The Rams had just two weeks earlier given the Lady Icers a thrashing, winning games by 10-0 and 7-0 scores.
Though the Lady Icers put up their best efforts to stay with Rhode Island, the team was unable to get any offensive production and lost 6-1. The team got its only goal from senior Katie King, who has been one of the few bright spots this season, and a constant scoring threat.
The Lady Icers were looking to end their season on a high note with a victory against Bates on Sunday in the consolation game. Through two periods, the team seemed determined to win and held a 3-1 lead. In the third, though, a lack of defense and a key penalty allowed Bates to creep back into the game.
With six minutes left, King got a five-minute penalty for a punch that team members said King didn't throw. The penalty left the Lady Icers shorthanded, and Bates tied the game to send it to overtime.
While the Lady Icers played hard in through the first overtime, the shooters couldn't put the puck in the net. Finally, in the second overtime, Bates scored the winning goal and put an end to Penn State's season. Though the season ended in yet another defeat, the Lady Icers said that if the defense had been just a bit stronger, especially against Rhode Island, they could have been more successful.
"Against Rhode Island, we were able to hold them off in the first and third periods," senior defenseman Stephanie Feyock said. "It was just a trend of 10 minutes in the second period where it went bad that hurt us."
