Society should learn gay lifestyle fact of life
After having read the refreshingly large number of letters opposing Chris Kovalchick's spew of bile, I feel it necessary to address a common misconception in a number of these responses. The misconception that homosexuality is a choice, or a preference, or -- even stranger -- an "alternative lifestyle." Whether one is born or develops a specific sexual orientation - and we all must admit, the jury remains out on both these possibilities -- it is experienced by most everyone as something that simply "is." And the heterosexuals among us, including me, can consider themselves lucky to not ever having to deal with the likes of Mr. Kovalchick. I don't know how one can presume that anyone in their right mind would "choose" or "prefer" to live a life that is and will be, particularly in the less enlightened parts of this world, a constant struggle. I applaud the Collegian for putting lesbian and gay couples demonstrating their love for each other on the front page. I disagree with the idea of "having to wait until society is ready." Sweeping things under the carpet and pretending that they don't exist has never changed anything anywhere. I should know. I am from Germany. Natascha Hoffmeyer
