Jaeger breaks goals record
ACHA Hockey

Collegian Staff Writer

Icers fans in attendance will remember it for quite some time. Though they probably didn't accept it, chances are Washington & Jefferson fans understood its significance.

History was made at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion on Saturday as Kevin Jaeger became the Icers' most prolific goal-scorer. The night before, after a six-game hiatus from the net, goaltender Chris Matteo returned, earning his first shutout at home.

The No. 2 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers honored seven seniors and concluded the regular season on a seven-game unbeaten streak, playing arguably their best hockey heading into Nationals. They (23-6-3) swept No. 13 Washington & Jefferson this past weekend with an impressive 11-0 victory on Friday, followed by a more competitive 4-2 victory on Saturday.

"This has been kind of a tale of three seasons so far," Icers coach Joe Battista said.

After starting the season 9-0, the Icers fell on hard times, going 3-3-2 in their next six games. And now, when playing impressive hockey matters most, Penn State appears to be back on the right track. Friday's blowout was important to the team's psyche.

"It was important to me to get the shutout. If you're an ACHA team and you're looking at the scores from this weekend and here's a team that's going to Nationals [and] they're playing us and not only did we beat them but we shut 'em out," Battista said.

"It's gonna send a message to teams that we're ready to play playoff hockey," he said.

On Saturday, though, Washington & Jefferson would not go quietly. It rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game with two quick goals in the final minute of the second period.

"All I said to them at the end of the second period was, 'At Nationals, it doesn't matter by how many [goals], it's do you win,' and we found a way to get it done," Battista said.

Jaeger scored the eventual game-winning goal 2:57 into the third period. It was his 130th, which set a new school record, passing Lynn Sipe.

A lot of things went right for the team over the weekend. The Icers had a blowout win on Friday, proving they can still score goals, coupled with Saturday's more playoff-type atmosphere.

"It wasn't a pretty win [Saturday], but it was a gut-check win," Battista said.
