Student leaders: Combat hate with support

We, the members of the Cabinet of Student Leaders at Penn State, wish to express our absolute horror at the contents of Chris Kovalchick's recent editorial.

This blatant display of hate cannot be accepted in any place that calls itself a community. Such hate rhetoric devalues and debases human life, and endangers not only the queer community, but also all marginalized ones.

Referring to straight people as "real people that actually matter" and to the queer community as "nothing short of disgusting and pathetic" crosses the line between opinion and hate speech. By willingly and knowingly engaging in this hateful propaganda, The Daily Collegian shares blame for the pain Kovalchick's words have and will cause.

Kovalchick has loudly vocalized his hatred; we in turn must scream our support of the LGBTQA community. Reach out to your friends. Voice your opinions. Cultivate change. Vote. Don't give undue credibility to the skewed perspectives of the ignorant.

If "We Are ... Penn State," we must take collective responsibility for what that means. Let's not forget the words of our Alma Mater: "May no act of ours bring shame / To one heart that loves thy name."
