I'm writing this in response to the recent uproar over the photo of the gay and lesbian couples on the front page of the Collegian, and the "hate mail" it inspired.
I'm writing because I too was somewhat offended by this photograph taking front-page status, or really being in the paper to begin with.
Before I am slammed with labels such as "gay-basher," "bigot," or just considered "ignorant and intolerant," let me explain that I would be just as angry to see a heterosexual couple on my front page. I'm tired of having to walk around couples sucking face on my way into class. I believe these sorts of "activities" have their time and place -- not in front of everyone else on campus.
I do not enjoy seeing PDA everywhere, and I especially do not wish to pick up my morning copy of the paper and have it thrown in my face.
I've had this conversation with many people who share the same view; hopefully we can avoid being labeled as homophobes simply because we do not wish to see people (of any sexual orientation) making out on the cover of our paper in large, color photographs.
